Print: Baxter - CL 274 - Fruit No. 2 (after Lance) This is a companion print to Fruit No 1 (after Lance) which at the time of writing is also available on the website – search Fruit or 1768.

Courtney Lewis in 1924 writes that Baxter took these from a Lithograph rather than from the picture direct which is unusual for Baxter but CL doesn’t say where he got that information from.

Lance was a prolific painter of still life of fruit so might be more influenced by (after) than an exact copy. The No 1 and No 2 must be Baxter’s numbering not Lance’s.

Unusually, for Baxter, on some prints, there is some hand-colouring on both these but that can, with care, be used to help differentiate between Baxter and Le Blond prints of these two. This pair, being on the original embossed titled mounts are 100% Baxter.

The print were produced from twelve zinc blocks, and were originally sold at 1s. 6d..
