Print: Baxter CL 307 – Used in Carnan's Ladies' Complete Pocket Book, 1858 and Le Souvenir, 1850 and also issued separately by Baxter.
 
Brougham Castle lies just south of Penrith in Cumbria and has been a ruin for many years. Even in this state it was a popular visitor attraction in the Victorian days, made popular by the likes of the poet William Wordsworth and the painter JMW Turner amongst others.
 
The castle is seen high up on the left; the river Lowther runs down the centre of the print, and a man driving cattle is in the foreground.
 
When in the pocket book under the print is the title and then "From a Painting by J. Varley," and "Baxter's Patent Oil Printing, 11, Northampton Square,”.
